Thank you for your interest in the role of Diocesan Director of Education for Church of England Birmingham. As you consider whether God is calling you to a new and different form of service and use of your leadership skills, please be assured of my prayers.
Our vision is to see growing churches and flourishing schools at the heart of each community. Our schools are significant to our mission and are very much part of the work of Church of England Birmingham. Alongside the necessary relevant professional background, it is essential that our Diocesan Director of Education is someone who sees their work as a response to God’s call. The new Director of Education sits as part of our wider Diocesan team seeking to lead with the love, wisdom, humility and courage that are the fruit of abiding with Christ.
The Director of Education role has evolved through the gifting of the person in post. Each season has brought a different person with the right skills to do the next part of the journey. The world of education doesn’t stand still, and we are actively engaged in developing our work. As our current Director retires, I am excited for the future and what you may bring. This role is a blessing to our schools, the children and communities we serve and to those who are called to hold it.
Do consider exploring this calling further through informal conversations with the Chair of the Board and or the current Director and through the application process.
The Rt Revd Dr Michael Volland
Bishop of Birmingham

Thank you for your interest in the role of Diocesan Director of Education for Church of England Birmingham.
Our current Director is retiring at the end of this academic year, and we are looking to appoint her successor to take up the role in September 2026.
Our Diocesan Board of Education vision centres on Church schools living out the good news of Jesus: transforming the world by transforming lives. We believe that Church schools are central to the Church of England’s mission, serving families and communities by educating for the fullness of life for all. As the Gospel of Jesus transforms lives, our education aims to empower children and young people to be agents of change for themselves and others. Educating in the light of the Gospel means giving every child opportunities to succeed beyond school, including access to employment, housing and all essentials for a happy, flourishing life. In our schools, children and young people should both receive and share love.
We are looking to appoint a Director who has a clear vision for Church School Education and a desire to further develop our work here in Birmingham.
If you would like an informal conversation with me or our current Director, Sarah Smith, to help you in considering your application, then we would be happy to speak with you - please arrange via Laura McGunigle, Satis Education using the details at the bottom of this web page.
We look forward to hearing from you.
The Very Revd Matt Thompson
Chair of Birmingham Diocesan Board of Education
